Description

We're creating a new way for users to share application content with each other -- directly into the Inbox.

Estimated Timing

November / December 2009

Details

To help focus users on sharing directed, intentional content from within applications, we're improving the Share dialog. Going forward, users will be able to send messages to each other from within your application.

Here's a little more about how we think it will work:

  • Users will click a Share or "Send message" button
  • This will pop up a compose message dialog
  • You can pre-fill one name and the attachment to the message
  • The user types in the recipient names (if more than one), a subject and a body
  • The user clicks Send, and the message is delivered to the recipients' Inbox

FAQs

Why not just let developers send users direct messages into the Inbox instead of through email? One of our primary goals in enabling users to share their email addresses with developers is to give developers a direct method to communicate with users -- without Facebook intervention. Developers can send updates to fans of their applications (a filter in the Inbox) if they'd like to reach them on Facebook, and will be able to increment their Counters if they want to alert users to an action to take within an application.
