Talk:Facebook Connect
From Facebook Developer Wiki
It looks like this developers wiki uses Facebook Connect for mediawiki authentication. Are any tutorials available that explain how to achieve that?
- We're not using Connect on our wiki... yet! Over a year ago, an engineer here hooked up Facebook authentication for our wiki. But yes, we will be offering Connect as our authentication model at some point. -- Pete (563683308 13:53, 5 December 2008 (PST))
- Cool. I'm going to try playing around with an extension to AuthPlugin.php and see if I can get that to work with Connect. If you all figure it out first, it would be cool if you post the extension to the MediaWiki extensions page so that others can do the same integration. Seems like MediaWiki + Facebook has a lot of potential for non-profit organizations to develop strong user communities. -- Michael 3406767 22:19, 5 December 2008 (PST)
- I completely agree with Michael. I made a wiki for my Fraternity last month and turned to Facebook Connect to incorporate the dynamic privacy and Facebook-publishing features, as we wanted to grant UCLA kiddies special access and promote the Greek system. Anyways, I made an experimental extension over this last week and I'm publishing it to MW:Extension:FBConnect as we speak. --Garrett 23:19, 7 December 2008 (PST)
- Please keep us posted on how this extension works for you. I too would like to integrate Facebook Connect to my wiki. 1590832071 11:03, 16 December 2008 (PST)

It'd be nice to have a link to JS_API_T_FB.Connect on this page. That page is currently a bit hard to find. -- 419214 14:28, 20 December 2008 (PST)
- Weird. I thought I put a link to JS_API_Index already, since that's the top level page for the docs. It's there now. Thanks. -- Pete (563683308 08:56, 21 December 2008 (PST))
I am interested in incorporating Facebook Connect into some of our social networks however we are concerned that we will not have access to nor own the data of our users that use Facebook Connect on the sites. The Terms of Service only seem to refer to data in relation to Applications, can anyone please tell me what the situation is behind ownership of data that is gathered on an external site but via a Facebook Connect user?
Yes - I am also interested in seeing documentation about data ownership and reporting via FB Connect?
Also interested in the above question. In particular - will we have access to other user profile data such as age, location, etc. to use on our site.
i have a situation : - user presented fconnect login button - user opens facebook on another browser window and logs in - user comes back and clicks fconnect button. - user presented a NON-RESIZEABLE connect window from facebook. the connect button is eaten up in the bottom part of the window. so effectively the user cannot press the "connect" button from facebook.
- Hi Jon. I tried that on Safari 4 and Tech Crunch and couldn't repro. What browser/OS combo are you using, and what's your URL? Thanks, Pete (563683308 11:53, 27 February 2009 (PST))
not sure if my last reply went through: here is a link to a screenshot on my local server [1]

[edit] FB Connect in french
Hi, I'm currently thinking about intagrating FB to a new web site i'm working on. The only probleme I have is that all the instructions (connect with facebook) provided to the user are in english. The web site i'm working on is only in french and is regulated by governement law to have all of it's content in french. Is it possible to edit the instructions to have them in french?
- You're more than welcome to translate the Connect documentation into French -- as long as you create new pages for this (they can have the same title with "French" in parentheses or something, as in "Facebook Connect (en francais)" -- something like that). We don't have anyone on staff who can do this, however. As for the Facebook Connect dialogs, if the user is reading Facebook in French, then the Connect dialogs (but not the titles) will be in French. To change the language in which you are reading the site, select Francais from the menu at the bottom left of Facebook, next to the copyright. Does this help?

[edit] I keep getting a database error on my site
I embedded the coding into my website for fb users to be able to leave comments on my website via facebook as well as sign into fb from my website and it is not working correctly. Everything loads, I see the comment box populate as well as the facebook connect log in bar. However when I tested it to leave a comment, it says that there is a database error. I used the 3 step social mark up in order to set everything up, are there problems I don't know about with this technology that require more than completing the social mark up? My site is fiercelive.com if someone can take a look and play around with it to see whats wrong that would be greatly appreciated. I have noticed that is also only works on Google Chrome and IE as well.
hey facebook administrator,,,
i wanna give an opinion how abt makeing windows media player plug's in at facebook to let people know what are you listening at you access point while you are using facebook.. i hope you like this idea.. regards
[edit] Friendly sugguestion slash great idea
This may seem kind of pointless, but i thought it would be cool to keep track of which friends joined a group ater you suggested it to them. Groups or good causes, if i send a sugguestion to a ton of my firends to get the word out, should be part of my profile somewhere with a feedback section for those who have joined/were notified because of me.. dumb idea? let me know if i can do this myself... or if its a waste of time cause i think it would be cool. thanks. whitley (20:11 November 2009)
[edit] Add Me To Facebook link
I'm working on an independent site on some domain www.somedomain.com where there are several user profiles. There is an option to "View other users" which allows a user to view their peers and their profiles. I would like to ability to allow anyone who provides their facebook e-mail address be added as a friend to whoever wants to friend them.
For example I have logged in to the site as Ehsan Keta and I can view other peers:
Mark Santos: Add me via Facebook: [+] mSantos@gmail.com . . . Jane Watson: Add me via Facebook: [+] jWatson@hotmail.com
Now when I click say, Jane's e-mail or button I want it to connect to facebook, I'd sign in and I would Immediately be able to ADD her.
Is it possible?
Is there a way to do this without having any information about the other users except their e-mail addresses?
Or would I need more info?
I have look everywhere for the answer but I can't seem to find it. Maybe I missed it.
Thanks for your help!!
- Sounds like you want to implement friend linking, which let's a user who's already connected to your site find his or her Facebook friends who have already connected their Facebook accounts with your site. Read Connect/Linking_Your_Users_to_Facebook for details. Pete -- 563683308 18:03, 23 November 2009 (PST)
- Thanks, Pete. I looked this over and it's not exactly what I had in mind. It seems friend linking provides me with a way to connect all those who have Facebook accounts to be connected to my site via Facebook and this connection would be forever until they unregister, I wish not to have this eternal connection if possible and I don't want to have ALL users who have an account with my site and Facebook be displayed ALL at once to one user.
- What I'm asking is much simpler, assuming it exists. I would like someone to click a link "Add xxxx to Facebook" and that would open a new window asking the current user to login and then be redirected automatically by somehow finding the xxxx person's Facebook profile by doing an e-mail match and then the user will be able to simply click the "Add xxxx as a friend". Thanks again!
